In Pursuit of an Organized Life

. . . putting life in order

Room of the Month

I have a new idea to help focus my organizational effort.  I am hoping to have a room of the month and focus my extra non-maintance cleaning on that room.  I’m hoping that I will be able to see more progress than if I spread my energy throughout the house.

The month long focus should also help me to allow for flexibilty as far as when things get done.  I sometimes set goals to clean out a room or closet and then do not complete them and feel like a failure.  Sometimes I set goals that are unrealistic.  Other times I am just lazy and choose to do something else and then get mad at myself for not meeting the goal I set.

My room for the month of December is my bedroom.  It has become a cluttered mess due to us hiding items out of view from visitors and plopping stuff down quickly before going to bed.  I need to do a serious overhaul on my closet and dresser. I have to be honest on if I will ever wear it again.  I also have to take a serious look at if I SHOULD wear it again.  Does it fit?  Do I like it? Does it look good on me?  Unfortanately, this prodject will likely involve shopping to replace items that are worn out or the wrong size.

I’d love to say that in 12 months most of my house will be organized, free of cluter, and a sanctuary of stuff I treasure.  However, I also don’t want to lie to myself.  I may end up focusing more than one month on a room or rotate to a different room without completion.  Focus on December and adapt from there.

Priorities

I heard a quote that  I don’t quite remember, but it was something like—-If you live according to your priorities, you will be happier.   It made me think about my priorities and I’ve decided that they are fitness, work, family, and organization.  Obviously, there are other areas that are important to me, but if I try to do too much my head explodes.   On the other hand, I can’t focus too much energy on one area or my life becomes out of balance and caotic.

I think about how often I’m doing filler tasks that aren’t towards my main goals.  TV, facebook, thinking about completing a task, etc.  I tried to fill in the idonethis emails to chart what I accomplished.   It was a nice way to reflect on where my time went and if it was spent how I wanted.  Realistically, I will not be productive all of the time, but I want to make sure my non-productive times are enjoyable.  Putting in a movie I want to watch rather than watching random tv show that is the “least bad show” on in its time slot.  I want to be careful that this site is used to motivate me to progress rather than help procrastinate.

Here is a brief update on my priorities.

Fitness—going well.  I’m doing a wide variety of activities and sneaking in more short burst of exercises at home.  I’ve had a session with a personal trainer and have enjoyed getting suggestions for exercises and an idea of what weight to use for each exercise.  I love that I have some plan to follow when I go to workout rather than wandering around and doing a few reps on my favorite machines or doing exercises I like.  He designed a circuit workout so  I can do it 1-3 times depending on my endurance, time, and body for the day.

Work—taking a short break from work tasks.   I am enjoying the time off—we will see if it bites me in the butt later.  Work takes up so much of my waking time so it needs to be a priority.  I do enjoy my work—but I need to feel like there is more to me too.  I always have great ideas and plans for work, but don’t have the time to do all of them that I would like.  On the positive side, I had a great meeting that helped energize me and add confidence.  It was great to talk with other SLPs and brainstorm.

Family—Love my family with all my heart.  The girls are growing and doing cute things everyday.   The holidays make me think of traditions and expectations.  How do you balance and establish traditions?  We are still in the mist of establishing our immediate families traditions.  Traditions from each side of the family, maintaining old traditions and finding new ones, what emphasis/money to spend on each holiday?  How do you enjoy the holidays with kids at different ages?  How do I make the holidays meaningful without being stressful?

Organization—not doing as well with that as I have hoped, but to be fair I also haven’t put the time or effort in.  My husband and I went through the laundry/storage room.  It felt great to speed through it and have things dealt with right away rather than having a pile to address later.  I could ask my husband where to put an item, what to toss, and figure out what something is.  I forgot how large that room was.  The floor is mostly clear and the counters still have stuff on them, but are piles rather than random collage of junk and treasures.

Well I’m off to either de-stress or get stuff done.  Have a great day!

Strange Motivation

I had an uneasiness yesterday.  Nothing was persay wrong—just off and antsy.  Nothing I wanted to do seemed like the a was on tv and my husband was busy.  So upon my husband’s advice—I did exercises—which was nice, but I need work on my side planks.

Then I went up stairs and did a quick tidy of bathroom and got ready for my bath.  Well the cough medicine bottle was placed on its side and started to drip.  Red cough meds dripping from 3 feet up onto a toliet makes it look like someone died.  So I actually cleaned the bathroom.  It’s been on my list for days and I probably spent more time thinking about doing it—than actually doing it.   So it felt good to actually get it done.

Well I’m off to wash the floor in the bathroom to finish off the project.  First—I’m going to get my school stuff out of the car though.  There are plenty of times when I would have worked on it—had it been inside the house—I know it’s sad.  Hope you are getting more done than I am.

How to spend time

I have a larger break coming up.  The question is how to spend it.  In some ways, it should be easier to figure out what to do because there is more time, but that also makes more options.  Below are some thoughts.

  • Find a balance between planning and enjoying the moment
  • Exercise
  • Focus on one thing and make progress or focus on many things for balance?
  • Find ways to get out of the house and/or be social
  • Get in routine for cleaning and exercise
  • Plan for work
  • Use my time well
  • Get to some of those “some day projects”
  • Tackle clutter
  • Spend quality time with the kids
  • Finnish online continuing ed
  • Not stress about what I didn’t get done
  • Be productive
  • Blog more
  • Phone relatives and friends

As you can see I have alot of thinking left to do and figure out.  For now it is time to start getting my daughter ready for bed.  Have a great day!

More visitors needed!

I’ve decided I need to have people over at least once a month. It was so nice to have the whole house clean at one time. Got me to do all the stuff I put off like dusting and cleaning the floor well etc. Well now I should stop stalling and get some school work done before the kids wake up. So much to do in such a little nap!

Have a great day!

Busy and Class

So it’s been a while since I’ve posted.   Life has been busy with halloween, progress reports, and a trip to visit family.   All of them were worth while—well the progress reports are required and are taking longer than I had originally planned.  So here are some general updates.

  • Bought personal training sessions with birthday money.  I’m hoping it will help me keep focused on exercising and give me some new ideas.   I’ve enjoyed the ones that I he gave me.  I haven’t been working out or running as much as I’d like, but still doing it somewhat.  I ran 1 mile in 10:02 which is pretty good/average for me—but the nice part was it didn’t feel like I was pushing it—so I haven’t lost all of it yet.

  • Tried time management/goal setting class and stress managment coaching.  Both are free.   They gave me some good ideas.

  • I’m going to try vertical scheduling of my time—Monday and Wed  cleaning —-tuesday and thursday exercise—and Friday relax

Well I should start working on the house.  We are having people over for a movie party and right now the house is not how I want it to be.  Wish me luck!

Have a great day!
